Kevin Henkes writes brilliant picture books and sensitive chapter books. When I saw Two Under Par at a local library I snapped it up. It was okay, but definitely not a hole in one. There's a blended family learning to come together, a boy learning to substitute his real step father for his mythic missing dad, and a miniature golf course.
My fifth grader read it and said he liked it, but I found it pretty bland. C+

Remember that this is from 1987. Tastes do change, but you are right that Henkes isn't at his best when writing YA. Don't even attempt Protecting Marie or Words of Stone. I deaccessioned them both.
I read this one when it was new and thought it was bad then. I'm with you, C+ at best.
I've never heard of this author...sorry what you read wasn't his best work - that's always so disappointing, isn't it?

I love Henkes, but I've never even seen this one. Too bad it wasn't... um...good. Whew! Avoided the obvious ending to that sentence!

Thanks for this - I am a giant fan of his children's books, but I haven't ventured beyond the picture books.
Interesting to read the comments on this one. I like Henkes but I love the Easter on about Owen's peep the best!
