Valentines Day Greetings

I do not seem to be catching up. Well, back in February I got sick and languished for several days. I had to cancel the book club I host at my house. Then I got better and got a new crown put on my tooth, which made my head uneasy so I decided to languish for one more day while I was feeling well enough to enjoy it.

My son came home from a trip, and my sister left on a trip so I took my nephew out to dinner and we had a really good time.

Goodreads thinks I am currently (in June) reading 54 books. It’s a little high. The library says I have 42 books checked out. That’s close to reasonable.

Books Completed  February 13

Gold Dust, Catherine Asaro. I like the underclass kids and their Olympic dreams.

The Teacher of Nomad Land, Daniel Nayeri. I knew absolutely nothing about what was happening in Iran during WWII, and my favorite method of learning history is good kidlit, so I was delighted with this book. I liked how removed the kids were from most of the stuff in Europe, how the Jewish orphans were treated, and how the kids ruggedly refused to become mean.

Karen’s Ghost Graphic Novel, D. K. Yingst. This highlighted the good stuff about Karen, her imagination and willingness to include people, while not giving much scope to her tendency to let her bossiness sometimes stray into bullying. I still find the marriages between second graders deeply weird.

The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson. Great worldbuilding, tremendous in scope, with lots of room for varied characters. I’m too old to appreciate such cat squasher books though; I don’t have much time left on this planet.

Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, Lauren Tarshis. Quirky kid story (she’d probably get a diagnosis today) but I like that and her directness and courage were fun to read.

Self Love Poetry, Melody Godfred. This poetry book to start of the Torches and Pitchfork’s “Make it Better” theme for the year had an interesting concept. On facing pages two poems address the same topic, one leaning left brained and the other right brained. The topics were a bit repetitive since they were all aspects of self acceptance and love but it was a worthwhile read.

Heads You Lose, R.L. Stine. This was more adventure story than horror, with the kids running around in their time travel portal stuff. The kids weren’t that nasty, but they also weren’t that bright or interesting.

She Rides Shotgun, Jordan Harper. I enjoyed the movie and I enjoyed the book. They did different things in ways that reflect the strengths of the mediums, but both things were in the same ballpark.

Books Started

Karen’s Ghost Graphic Novel, D. K. Yingst. A Babysitters Little Sister book.
Testimony of Mute Things, Lois McMaster Bujold. A new Penric!

50 Great Poets, ed. Milton Crane. Mail bribe. Hopkins is hard core.
The Writer's Stance: Reading and Writing in the Disciplines, Dorothy U. Seyler. Mail bribe.
Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Marlon James. The ending moves back to the personal.
War Cross, Marie Lu. Mail bribe. My gaming is not on this level.
