Barbara Park is probably most famous for the Junie B Jones books, but I much prefer her middle school books, which also feature kids that aren't completely likable.
Beanpole is about a middle school girl who is very sensitive about her height, which is much taller than the other kids she knows. She wants to be normal, to be popular, and the book follows her mostly amusing attempts at fitting in. Nothing great, but lifelike and comfortable. B-
